The Best Skin Care Products for Women Over 50

What is the Best Skin Care for Dry Skin?

In my experience, finding the best skin care for dry skin and especially skin care products for women over 50 and beyond is not always easy, so I’m glad that friends introduced me to Mary Kay when I was in my 20s. Because my face has always been very dry, I found out that the best way to care for my skin was not using soap to avoid drying it. I will share how to keep your skin looking young even though it has a tendency to be dry. Moist and hydrated skin is the number one way to delay wrinkles so you will look younger at any age, even in your 50s and 60s, and beyond.

Since I do have dry skin on my face, my daily skin care regimen begins with a gentle cleansing. It has decreased the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to a remarkable degree. I’ve been told more than once because of my healthy skin that I look 10 or more years younger than I am. I will share with you the best anti-aging skin care for women, based on my personal experience.

Best Skin Care for Dry Skin: Daily Routine

The following is a step by step routine to use in caring for your skin each day.

Before you begin, have the following items ready:

  • A headband or barrettes to keep hair off your face.
  • A clean washcloth.
  • A sink or basin with access to hot tap water.
  • Wash your hands.

Step 1: Cleansing

Mary Kay Gentle Cleansing Cream ~4 Oz Tube Mary Kay Timewise 3 in 1 Cleanser Normal/Dry Skin – 4.5 oz. Mary Kay Botanical Effects Formula 1 ~ Cleanse ~ Dry and Sensitive Skin

Please note that classic Formula 1 Gentle Cleansing Cream is discontinued and becoming harder to find. I recommend this product first because it is my favorite formulation and have used it for years. I found the best price on Ebay for this item. You may prefer a different product based on price and availability.

First thing in the morning, I use a gentle cleanser. Formula 1 Gentle Cleansing Cream is the best I have found. However, since Formula 1 Gentle Cleansing Cream is becoming very expensive to buy, another option is TimeWise Anti-Aging Cleanser 3-in-1 or Mary Kay Botanical Effects Hydrate Formula 1 for dry skin.

I apply the cleansing cream to my face and throat, being careful to apply light pressure and upward strokes to avoid pulling on facial skin, especially around the eyes. I then wash it off with a clean washcloth that has been soaked with warm tap water and squeezed dry. Again, I use gentle upward strokes to avoid pulling on fragile skin.

Step 2: Freshening

Mary Kay Formula 1 Hydrating Freshener Mary Kay Botanical Effects Freshen 1 ~ Dry & Sensitive Skin

Please note that classic Formula 1 Hydrating Freshener is discontinued and is becoming harder to find. I recommend this because it is my favorite formulation and have used it for years. You may prefer a different product based on price and availability.

A hydrating freshener tightens, tones, and refreshes dry thirsty skin. Formula 1 Hydrating Freshener is great for removing all traces of makeup and grime that you may have missed in Step 1. Since Formula 1 Hydrating Freshener is becoming hard to find and is quite expensive, I now use Mary Kay Botanical Effects Freshen for dry and sensitive skin instead. Use a cotton ball lightly moistened with freshener and always use gentle upward strokes as you wipe off any excess cleanser. Pat gently and use care not to pull on the fragile skin around the eyes. (Some formulas are available with a spray mist.)

Lacura Anti-Wrinkle Face Day Cream with Bioflavonoid and Coenzyme Q10

Is There a Good Alternative to Mary Kay Enriched Moisture Formula 1?

When on vacation, I had to search all over for a substitute for Mary Kay Moisturizing Cream. It’s not available anywhere anymore! And so I found Lacura Brand Anti-Wrinkle Face Day Cream with Bioflavonoid and Coenzyme Q10 in a local store at a very reasonable price. This product is not in stores in my area, so I order it on Ebay. It leaves my skin feeling smooth and moist all day long!

Step 3: Moisturizing

Mary Kay Intense Moisturizing Cream (Dry Skin) 1.8 Oz Mary Kay TimeWise Age Fighting Moisturizer, Normal/Dry Skin (3 fl. oz.) Mary Kay Botanical Effects Hydrate Formula 1 (Dry Skin)

Please note that classic Enriched Moisturizer Formula 1, which is my favorite formulation is no longer available on Amazon. I have presented some comparable products that are still available.

Mary Kay Intense Moisturizing Cream (Dry Skin) 1.8 Oz (bottle is small)

Mary Kay TimeWise Age Fighting Moisturizer, Normal/Dry Skin or

Mary Kay Botanical Effects 2 for Normal / Sensitive Skin ~ Hydrate

Finally, I top off my dry skin care regimen with a good moisturizer to keep my skin moist all day. The method of applying any cream to your face is to use gentle upward, very light strokes, especially around your eyes. The skin around the eyes is very fragile so it’s important not to pull the skin when you apply moisturizer. The trick in applying moisturizer to the very fragile eye area is to use the tip of your ring finger. Use an outward stroke above the eye and an inward stroke (toward the bridge of your nose) under the eye. In this way, you will make a complete circle around your eye area as you apply moisturizer, and you won’t pull on fragile eye skin.

Step 4: Night Cream

Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream 2.1 ounce Mary Kay Timewise Repair Volu-firm Night Treatment with Retinol 1.7 Oz.

Please note that classic Extra Emollient Night Cream may have been discontinued and is becoming harder to find. I recommend this because it is my favorite formulation and have used it for years. You may prefer a different product based on price and availability.

If you have extremely dry skin like I do, you will want to moisturize at bedtime, too. The best product that I have found is Extra Emollient Night Cream. This formula helps when your skin is extremely dehydrated. Since the consistency can be quite thick, especially in cold weather, I have found that, if you wet your fingers with warm water it makes application easier. If I’m using this formula at night before bed, I like to keep my hair off my face with a headband. Again, always use gentle pressure to avoid stretching your facial skin. Sometimes, I even use the extra emollient night cream as a daytime moisturizer, allow it to soak into my skin, and then remove it gently with a warm washcloth.

Remember to protect the skin on your neck!
The skin on your neck and throat is just as important as the skin on your face. During your skin care regimen, remember to apply cleanser, freshener, moisturizer AND sunscreen to the neck, throat, and even your decolletage regions, which are particularly susceptible to sun damage.

Step 5: Sun Protection

Prevent sun damage to your skin! This is a major component to keep your skin looking young.  There are many sunscreens on the market but I prefer one with a high SPF (sun protection factor), of 70 or more. I have had the bad experience of an allergic breakout when I mix sunscreen and my other facial products, particularly those with the little granules in them. Luckily, I have found a product that doesn’t cause a bad reaction for me, Neutrogena Age Shield Face Lotion Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 110. This is thicker and offers a lot of protection if you are going to be out in the sunlight for an extended period. (Remember to reapply if you sweat a lot or go into the water.)

Another favorite sunscreen that is light and sheer and good for daily use, even under makeup, is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock SPF 70.

I often have to be reminded to put on my sunscreen, but these products are easy to use and easy to apply and help prevent wrinkles and dark spots in the long run, so it’s really worthwhile to remember.

New Botanical Effects Skin Care for Dry Skin

Mary Kay’s Botanical Effects skin care products are my new favorite whenever I have a hard time finding Mary Kay classic formula because they are light, not greasy, and sourced from natural botanicals.

Since my article is directed at women who have dry skin like me, I have not yet mentioned other skin types. However, there is a range of products made by Mary Kay for various needs: Formula 1 is for dry skin. For mixed dry/oily skin, search for Formula 2, and for oily skin, use Formula 3 to find what will work best for your particular skin type and skin care regimen.

A Cosmetic Surgery Alternative

cosmetic surgery alternative natural facelift joan rivers

Joan Rivers facelift

Have you ever considered a cosmetic surgery alternative? With all the celebrity horror stories about facelifts gone wrong, it certainly made me think twice about having cosmetic surgery! When I was making preparations for my 50th birthday, I decided I wanted to lose weight. There’s an old saying in the United States that, after middle age, it’s either “your face or your fanny,” meaning if you lose weight from your backside, your face can end up looking too thin and old. I know you have seen middle-aged women who are slim and trim but their faces look old, haggard and tired. I wanted to lose the weight but not look older in the process.

As we age, gravity takes its toll on our bodies, and especially our faces. Wrinkles might add character, but sagging skin around the eyes and cheeks just makes us look OLD.  That’s where many people opt for a surgical facelift. As you can see from the before and after photo of Joan Rivers, that’s not always the best option to keep you looking truly young.

Not only that, but the idea of surgery on my face was terrifying to me, and that is why I started looking for a cosmetic surgery alternative.

Natural Facelift Exercises

When I googled cosmetic surgery alternatives, I found something called the “natural facelift.” What many don’t realize is that there is a natural alternative to a facelift. I found out about a wonderful product that teaches you how to add that youthful “lift” back to your face without having to make an appointment with a plastic surgeon. That is Carole Maggio’s DVD and book, “Ultimate Facercise.” Through a series of exercises, this method shows how you can re-train your facial muscles, fight the effects of gravity, and regain those youthful contours to keep your skin young looking and healthy.

But Do Facial Exercises Work?

One of the questions you might ask is do facial exercises work? In my experience, the facial exercises that I have used for the past 15 years have made a huge difference in my appearance and self-confidence. Once you learn how to do them, the exercises become second nature and can be done anywhere.

How Do Facial Exercises Make You Look Younger?

As Carole Maggio demonstrates in her Facercise program, it’s important not to just exercise your body to keep the muscles toned, but to pay attention to toning the muscles of your face too. There are more than 40 muscles in your face, and if you don’t tone those muscles, it’s no wonder they grow weak and begin to sag after middle age.

In the Facercise program, Carole Maggio focuses on the main trouble spots. She instructs how to do facial exercises for sagging jowls to create a more defined jaw line, facial exercises for eyes to look brighter and more alert, facial exercises for your cheek muscles to give that sculptured high cheekbone look, and much more. There are even facial exercises that focus on your throat and neck to get rid of the “turkey neck” that comes with age and dieting.

Supplements for Beautiful Skin

To achieve a young and radiant appearance, don’t forget to include proper diet and quality supplements for beautiful skin. It’s well known that the skin is the body’s largest organ and most prone to damage from the environment. If you want to nourish your skin, you must remember to feed your body right, too.

IMPORTANT NOTE! This article is based upon my personal preferences for products that I use or have used. Please consult your health provider before using any of the featured supplements.

Eat Your Fruit and Veggies!

Beautiful skin requires nourishment.  In order to properly care for your skin, it’s important to eat a balanced diet consisting of the right amounts of the basics: protein, natural whole grains, healthy fats, and of course vegetables and fruit. Eating food that is near to the source (“local” food) is one way of protecting your health and providing a youthful glow to your skin. This means that your diet should consist of fresh, leafy vegetables and fruit whenever possible. Farmer markets are a great place to buy locally grown produce.

Drink Plenty of Water

The benefits of drinking plenty of water are enormous. In addition to keeping your digestion running smoothly and keeping a proper fluid balance, the effects of drinking plenty of water will be apparent in fresh and glowing skin. Women’s bodies are made up of about 55% water. If you don’t take in enough water, you become dehydrated and your skin will show it. Drinking eight 8-oz glasses (64 oz) of water a day is recommended. To use an example, a regular-sized sports bottle holds 20-oz.  For me, it’s easiest to fill the bottle and leave it on my desk as I work, and then refill three times though the day. I tend to forget when I’m at home, so I leave a glass of water on the kitchen counter to help me to remember to get my eight glasses of water.

In addition to getting enough water for healthy skin, it’s important to limit your intake of sodas (including diet drinks), caffeine, and alcohol. These tend to dry rather than nourish your skin.

If you drink fruit juice, that is fine in moderation but remember that you are getting concentrated sugars and not the benefit of the fiber that’s in whole fruit. Stick to water for the most part, and eat your fruit whole.

What if You’re Not Always Able to Eat Right?

Sometimes you just don’t take the time to eat right and your skin will show it. If you don’t always get enough fresh vegetables, there are supplements that you can take to enhance your intake of vitamins and minerals. I started taking extra supplements during pregnancy at the recommendation of my practitioner and have relied on a daily multivitamin ever since. After menopause, you may decide to include calcium supplements in your daily regimen.

The vitamin supplements that I use daily are Nature’s Life Soft Gelatin Multiple vitamins and Nature’s Life Calcium Softgel capsules. The soft gelatin capsules are easy to digest and are derived from natural ingredients. (Please see product information below.)
